Genetic linkage occurs when particular alleles are inherited jointly. Typically, an organism can pass on an allele without regard to which allele was passed on for a different gene. This is due to the independent assortment of chromosomes during meiosis. However, alleles that are on the same chromosome are more likely to be inherited together, and are said to be linked.
